I already know the answer to this one, and it's that it's an incredibly Nice Price pending a PPI. That small oil leak could be routine, or it could be disastrous. And I'd have to get the A/C working for my purposes, but that would be worth spending a grand or two on.

I'd be taking a good look at this one if I was ready to be in the market, but I'm not quite there yet. Would rather have a C2, but 964s are so hard to find, period, and hard to find in decent driver condition at a reasonable price.

AWD isn't exactly my favorite, but this thing has 3 pedals and looks to be in decent shape. I vote NP.

Beware, however, of a black-on-black car without working AC.

small oil leak could be as simple as not having a plastic washer on the drain plug.

And Porsche A/C repairs are never cheap, that is why so many have non working A/C.

Non-functioning A/C is a running theme with late 80s/early 90s vehicles of all types that originally ran on R12. It's a pain in the ass and expensive to do everything right in the conversion, regardless of the car.

Ehh....it looks like a nice example, but I can't help but think that unless you're planning to drive it in the winter I would keep looking for a C2.

A C2 would be my preference by a long-shot, but having tracked 964 prices for the last 12 months, a plain-jane C2 with a stick in good shape is difficult to find, period, and the prices just.keep.going.up. You can almost see it month by month.

We'll see when the time comes to spend the money if I'm not actually a little more picky about getting a C2.

Are you kidding me... I would LOVE a 964 Carrera 4, if I could afford it.

Better suspension and brakes than earlier 911s and 930s,

Still the same basic shell, so it can be back-dated to look more classic, if one would want to do that. 993 can't be backdated like that.

And living in the midwest... just a bit south of minneapolis, AWD is a BOON, and means that the car can be driven without fear of imminent oversteer death in the winter.

The only thing better, is if it were blue, but black is always classy, if maintenance intensive.

But with all Porsches... if you can't afford 2, you can't afford 1. purchase price is only half the budget.

That's a lot for needing a couple expensive repairs

a. 996 964

b. The '87 Targa is nice, but the damn spoiler needs to go and for something to live with every day I'd still prefer a 964.

The point still holds on 911 pricing; $24-25k for an '87 Targa would have been bonkers not that long ago, even.

87 is CP, imo. Body kit, respay, unoriginal wheels. You can get better for the same price and nice more original examplea for much more. Old 911 values are all about originality. If you want a good return on investment you won't get it with that.

The small oil leak could be down right tragic. The 964 twin-plug design reduced the cooling of the cylinder heads. On pre-91 cars engineers did away with the head gaskets all together to help transfer heat to the block. Problematic to say the least.

If an early car leaks here, the only permanent fix is to fit later-style cylinders and pistons and have the head machined to accommodate the new style gaskets. Bill? roughly $10,000.

Not with a 10 foot pole.

Unfortunately neglected and perhaps leaving soon. Since I got a DD it's been doing a lot of sitting, and while I've largely kept up on maintenance (have a few things on my list right now), I just don't get to drive it enough and I don't have a garage in which to be able to leave it fully torn apart. I'd hate to get rid of it, especially as I have no financial need to do so, but I feel bad letting it sit so much, and working on it is more stressful than it is enjoyable.
